Senior Chief Mukuni of the Tokaleya people of Southern Province says Paramount Chief Chitimukulu designate Henry Kanyanta Sosala does not entirely rely on President Michael Sata to sustain his chieftaincy.
Chief Mukuni said as far as he was concerned Sosala was properly elected as Chitimukulu according to Bemba traditions.
He said government recognition was only for purposes of gazetting a chief to be entitled to allowances.
“A chief is a chief in the eyes of the people even without government recognition. Government recognition is only to gazette a chief so that he is entitled to allowances,” Mukuni said.
“Henry Sosala was rightly chosen according to Bemba traditions and as far as I am concerned he is the right Chitimukulu.”
On Monday Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkandu Luo held a press briefing to drive home the point that government will take a major role in the choosing of chiefs.
Luo categorically said that Sosala had not been recognized as Chief Chitimukulu by President Michael Sata and will not take up that crown without approval from the Head of State.
