The office of the out-going Israeli President Shimon Peres has not listed the alleged meeting between him and Zambia’s Michael Sata as part of this week’s diary.
According to Israeli media, President Peres is heading on a final lap of official meetings to meet US President Barack Obama.
Preparations are being completed for Israeli President Shimon Peres final official visit to the US as head of state. Among the events and meetings being planned in conjunction with the primary purpose of President Peres is the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony scheduled to place on Thursday, June 26 in the Rotunda of the US Capitol.
Peres is expected to meet with President Obama in the oval office on Wednesday.
“The intent and goal of the legislative process awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to President Peres which will culminate in the Ceremony itself is to send a strong message to the world that the Congress of the United States by virtue of 2/3 of its members co-sponsoring the legislation stands shoulder to shoulder with the State of Israel,” Ezra Friedlander, CEO of The Friedlander Group, said in a statement.
An additional event is scheduled in conjunction with the official Congressional Gold Medal ceremony, honoring Robert Rechnitz, founder and chairman of both the Jerusalem Conference and Iron Dome Tribute. The reception will be held prior to the Ceremony with the participation of President Peres and Senator Kelly Ayotte who introduced the legislation in the Senate.
“Recognizing Bobby Rechnitz for his pivotal role of his stewardship and sustaining the bilateral relationship between the United States of America & State of Israel” will be highlighted by President Peres according to a statement released by the Shimon Peres Gold Medal Committee.
But this is not the only award President Shimon Peres would be getting during his DC visit.
The Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice, named after the late California congressman and Holocaust survivor Tom Lantos, announced this month that Peres has been selected to receive the 2014 Lantos Human Rights Prize in recognition of his unwavering dedication to the profound values of democracy and human rights, as well as his pursuit of peace, justice and reconciliation in the Middle East.
The award ceremony is also scheduled to take in place in Washington on Thursday, June 26.
“The nominating committee’s decision to honor President Peres with this award was inspired by Shimon Peres’s over 60 years of extraordinary leadership as a builder of his nation, as a global statesman and as a tireless and inspired advocate for peace and justice in the Middle East,” Katrina Lantos Swett, the foundation’s president, said in a statement. “President Peres stands out as a leader whose passion for his country and his people is equaled by his commitment to the cause of peace for all people of the region,”
Tom Lantos, who died in 2008, served fourteen terms in the House of Representatives as a committed Democrat, and was the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress. The Lantos Foundation established the Lantos Human Rights Prize in 2009 to honor his memory and to honor and bring to public attention heroes of the human rights movement.
