shimon-peresConfirming widespread doubts regarding the Patriotic Front government’s claims that President Michael Sata had suddenly traveled to Israel on a “working vacation,” yesterday Israeli President Shimon Peres was spotted in Washington DC.

President Peres gave an interview with the Washington Post and even appeared on camera on Tuesday, discussing his meeting the following day with President Barack Obama to receive the Congressional Medal of Honour.

On Monday, Acting Minister of Information Mwansa Kapeya aggressively defended President Sata’s business travel to Israel, and threatened to arrest anyone questioning the matter.

Kapeya, who confused Tel Aviv to be the “capital” of Israel, also claimed that President Peres would delay his trip to the United States in order to meet with President Sata. He said: “The problem is you Zambians like speculating. I have seen the letter of invitation from Mr. Peres to Mr. Sata and so he (Peres) is not going anywhere because of President Sata’s visit.”

It is now however clear that no meeting ever took place.

Information arriving to Zambia Reports from Israel indicate that indeed the president has indeed arrived safely to the country where he is recuperating but not serving in any official duties.

In response to the incorrect information being spread by the PF government, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly has issued a two-day ultimatum to Vice-President Guy Scott to deliver a statement to clarify President Michael Sata’s visit to Israel and help subdue unnecessary speculations on the matter.
