President Michael Sata has directed the Zambia Electricity supply corporation (ZESCO) to establish mini power hydro stations that could subsidize the country’s huge power deficit.

Speaking when he commissioned the one Mega watt Shiwangandu mini hydro power station in Chinsali this morning, Sata bemoaned the lack of investment in the Energy sector.

“Although this power station is only one mega watt, it shows the government’s commitment to creating a better Zambia for all by bringing electricity closer to the people especially in rural areas,” President Sata said.

And first republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda who accompanied Sata to Chinsali praised Sata as a man of action for taking electricity to his homeland.

“Tthe people of Zambia should be assured that they are under the leadership of a president who is hardworking, a man of action,” he said.

Sata was in Muchinga today with a huge delegation that included Energy minister Yamfwa Mukanga, Ttransport minister Chris Yaluma, Chief and traditional affairs minister Nkandu Luo, Shiwangandu MP Stephen Kampyongo, Chinsali MP Christopehr Mulenga, ZESCO Managing Director Cyprian Chitundu, Muchinga province minister Charles Banda, Chinese ambassador to Zambia Zhou Yuxiao, and United Nations Industrial Organisation (UNIDO) Chief for renewable and rural energy unit Diego Masera.
