A United Party for National Development official Kenny Ng’ona is commenting on the education standards and the Patriotic Front’s approach.
Here is his statement
I don’t understand why these people in gov’t positions want to be pushed to get things done. I have been following the Zambian high school curricular with keen interest ever since the PF gov’t changed it and decided to bring in a new one.
What amazes many is that up to now, two years down the line all the materials have not been printed in full. How are the teachers going to teach if they haven’t received what they are supposed to teach? How are the pupils going to right exams in the modules that their teachers haven’t been teaching them the correct syllabus?
Even in bookshops, for those that are privileged to take their children to private schools and afford to buy expensive study materials from Bookworld and other materials providers. You will not find the correct textbooks for the new syllabus. For example Social Studies is being taught at Junior high and no textbooks to support the subject. Pupils are told that it is a combination of three subjects, Civics, History & Geography. Isn’t this just meant to confuse the G7 term 5 pupils at junior high? Some schools are teaching ICT and they don’t have even a single computer to teach the pupils on how to use the computer.
Why teach things you don’t have textbooks or teachers handbook as it was called during our time? The patriotic gov’t should have first adequately equipped the ministry of education by printing out the necessary and required materials. This would have been easy for the teachers and the pupils in adapting to the new curriculum. The way things stand, it will be a total mess for the G9 pupils when they write their exams because of not having the right materials to teach with for the teachers and right materials to study for the pupils in most of the schools.
Ministry of Education should be serious with the way they are handling the change of curriculum in the education sector. If they have failed to print out the needed materials for all the schools then its better they revert back to the old curriculum which had enough books for everyone to learn, read, study and pass exams. EDUCATION IS POWER, GOV’T SHOULD NOT PLAY WITH EDUCATION.
