The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has observed that any fights among opposition political parties in the country will only reduce their effectiveness.
Opposition UPND President Hakainde Hichilema is said to have recently made a statement in which he referred to anyone staying or joining the MMD as being out of their minds, to which MMD leader Nevers Mumba has reacted by advising his counterpart to tame his tongue and stop attacking the former ruling party.
But CDP Executive Director Neo Simutanyi says his organization particularly finds it unfortunate that two major opposition political parties could now start fighting each other at a time they are supposed to be cooperating.
Dr. Simutanyi says his organization holds the position that such fights among opposition political parties is untimely as what they are supposed to do presently is to find ways of complementing each other.
He says it is also important that both the MMD and the UPND respect each other especially that both opposition political parties already have a following, constituencies and track records.
The CPD Executive Director however notes that despite the MMD having been losing in elections it is still a major political party and has the largest number of Members of Parliament in the opposition and therefore deserves respect.
He has affirmed that it is important opposition political parties start thinking seriously about working together especially in an event of an election soon or in 2016 general elections.
