ALLIANCE FOR BETTER ZAMBIA (ABZ)

PRESS STATEMENT

JULY 20, 2014
The following statement was issued by Alliance for Better Zambia:

Our party strongly condemns the barbaric behaviour of a school teacher at Roma Girls Secondary School in Lusaka that savagely beat up a Catholic nun who is head teacher of the same school.

The violent behaviour of the teacher which was shown on MUVI TV main news yesterday July 19, 2014 should be strongly condemned by all peace loving Zambians. This barbaric behaviour has no place in our civilized society.

We are also calling for the immediate arrest of the teacher and justice on behalf of the innocent Catholic nun whose beating represents notorious gender based violence.

It is very shameful and disheartening for a school teacher who should teach pupils civilized ways of solving differences to resort to violence over an issue that could easily be settled through dialogue. As such, we are very disappointed with this violent school teacher whose behaviour has potential to tarnish the image of the teaching fraternity in our country.

We are particularly dismayed that the violent school teacher decided to batter the vulnerable Catholic nun in front of MUVI TV cameras with the obvious motive of humiliating his victim. This behaviour should be condemned in the strongest terms possible.
Finally, we are calling upon leaders of congregations of Catholic nuns in Zambia to immediately put in place measures to protect their members from violent members of society and other social misfits.

Fr. Frank Bwalya
ABZ PRESIDENT
