National Nutrition Commission of Zambia says the increasing level of obesity among Zambian women is worrying.
Commission chairperson Musonda Mofu said that 20% of Zambian women were sporting heavy bodies while children continued suffering from malnutrition.
Mofu said the situation was slowly degenerating into a national crisis.
“A recent research has shown that there is a growing number of obese women with the percentages within the range of 15 to 20%. You find that in the same household where there are obese women, the children suffer from malnutrition,” he said.
“We should begin to address this problem more aggressively to avoid having a national crisis.”
The obese case is largely attributed to bad eating habits and a high alcohol consumption among the ladyfolk.
