The Zambian citizen Felix Ngoma who had been abducted in South Darfur, Sudan on July 6 has finally been released today after almost 20 days in captivity.
Ngoma is reportedly unharmed and healthy, and will return to Zambia tonight.
The Zambian government has also announced his release through Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary George Zulu.
The kidnapping of Ngoma, who had been working in Sudan as part of the International Organization of Migration (IOM) of the African Union, had become a hot button issue in Zambia after it was revealed that the Janjaweed militants were demanding a $1 million ransom, while others complained of the Patriotic Front (PF) government not doing enough to save him.
State Counsel Sakwiba Sikota went so far as to issue a public request to Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba, who is known to maintain close relations with al-Bashir’s government, to make an intervention to have him released.
The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (Unamid) stated in a press release that Ngoma abducted on a Sunday at about 5.30 pm when gunmen in a Land Cruiser intercepted him along the road between the Unamid regional headquarters and Nyala city.
