Former Zambia Railways Managing Director Clive Chirwa has opened his defence in a case in which he is facing two counts of corruption.
Prof Chirwa, a former Patriotic Front supporter had hardly settled at his new job in Kabwe, than he was fired by his employers over graft charges.
Prof Chirwa is accused of having not declared interest in hiring his firm Clavel Incorporated to train staff at Zambian Railways and also jointly charged with former Finance Director Regina Mwale over having authorized the K72, 000 monthly payment to Fallsway Apartments for accommodation which was above his entitlement.
In his defence Prof Chirwa said when he forwarded his firm’s proposal on 18th November, 2012 when he had not yet been employed by Zambia Railways despite having received the offer letter which he had not yet accepted.
Chirwa said staying at Fallsway Apartments was cheaper than at Hotel Intercontinental where he was staying before taking up the job as Zambia Railways Managing Director.
