The Young African leaders Initiative (YALI) has demanded that government gives reasons why Cabinet is delaying to table the final draft constitution.
Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba recently disclosed at a meeting he held with the Oasis Forum that the reason why the final draft constitution has to be tabled by Cabinet before it is released to the public is to ensure that the Technical Committee complied with it terms of reference.
YALI governance advisor Isaac Mwanza says his organization is particularly concerned that despite the Technical Committee having finished its work, Cabinet has not yet sat to look at the document.
Mwanza says with such delays his organization fears that it may even take beyond 2020 before the final draft constitution can be looked at by Cabinet.
He says this delay to table the final draft constitution thus shows lack of sincerity on the part of government because the more Cabinet delays to look at the document the longer it will take for Zambians to have a new constitution.
The YALI governance advisor says this is why his organization is seeking answers that either the Ministry of Justice or anyone from government gives reasons why the Cabinet has not tabled the final draft constitution.
