The United Party for National Development (UPND) has just registered its presence in North Western Province as the party scooped the Solwezi Central Constituency parliamentary seat.
This was when not more than 10,000 out of the 52,900 registered voters turned up to cast their votes in the Solwezi polls.
Electoral Commission of Zambia Returning officer Sarah Lunda declared UPND’s Candidate Dawson Kafwaya as the dully elected Member of Parliament for Solwezi at the Civic Centre at about 03:05 Zambian time.
Kafwaya polled 4,577 votes beating his closed rival Newton Malwa of the Patriotic Front who polled 3105 while MMD’s Lucky Mulusa failed to return his seat has only managed to finish 3rd with 1,897 votes from the 30 polling Stations.
“I do here by declare that the said Dawson Kafwaya this day is a dully elected as member of parliament for Solwezi Central,” Ms Lunda made the announcement.
The 11th September parliamentary by election was characterised with voter apathy as only 19% of the total registered voters had cast their votes.
Others who took part in the competition included the Forum for Democracy and Development FDD and United Independence Party (UNIP).
Dawson Kafwaya becomes a third parliamentarian for the opposition political party to lead Solwezi Central constituency after the late Benny Tetamashimba and Watson Lumba.
The UPND has continued to make great strides penetrating in North Western after not long ago its party took over leadership in Solwezi East constituency through Villie Lombanya.
