Freed Zambian opposition leader Nevers Mumba has challeged the Patriotic Front government to solve mealie meal shortages on the Copperbelt before calamity befalls the country.
The commodity is scarce on the Copperbelt with prizes sky-rocketing as a 25kg bag fetches between K75, 000 and K80, 000 from around K40, 000 when the PF government took office.
During a press briefing held at Jubilee Lodge after he was released from custody at Kamfinsa State Prison where he spent a night after spending another night at Nkana East Police Cells, Dr.Mumba accused the PF government of being jittery.
Dr Mumba, four of his MPs and two others, were arrested on Monday and charged for unlawful assembly following a meeting with Chief Nkana.
He said the PF government feared that he was on the Copperbelt to talk about the shortages of mealie meal.
Dr.Mumba recalled that in 1986 it was on the Copperbelt where residents rioted upon experiencing shortages of the commodity and that President Sata should move in and sort out the problem to avert a recurrence of food riots.
He has described his experience while in police custody as a sharpener and warned that no amount of intimidation will stop him from enjoying his democratic rights.
Dr. Mumba has also refuted media reports that the party owes any institution any money following reports that MMD was being pursued by Bank of Zambia and Napsa for debts incurred when President Sata was National Secretary for the party.
He has asked the investigative wing to follow those that acquired the debts because they did so in their individual capacity.
Dr Mumba visited Chisokone market to purchase mealie meal for prisoners but found the commodity out of stock.
