Police have been called in to quell riots by more than 100 students this evening at the University of Zambia (UNZA), where youths have come out in great numbers to protest recent comments by the Minister of Sports and Youth Chisimba Kambwili.
Kambwili, who had come under criticism recently for his use of UNZA facilities such as the Commonwealth Youth Centre on the university campus, was quoted by media as telling the students “they should just shut up or else they will regret.”
At the time of publication, the student riots were still underway so no information about the numbers of arrests or police actions were available to our correspondent. The escalating situation has prompted a security alert across State House as well, as officers are quickly being mobilised to address the situation.
Minister Kambwili had come under significant public criticism recently over the rejection of promised bursaries to accepted UNZA students, which resulted in the suicide of one 19-year-old woman.
