Newly crowned BBC 2012 African Footballer if the Year Christopher Katongo says it’s good to be recognised among the greatest platers on the continent.
Katongo was presented with the award in Lusaka on Monday night becoming the 13th player to win it since inception in 2000.
“Iam happy people have spoken and this is a challenge [that] I can do more. This [is] because of my hard work at club and country level. Its good I’m now recognised among the greatest players in africa,” he said.
BBC senior sports producer Farayi Mungazi who travelled to Lusaka to present the award said Katongo amassed 40% of the votes to beat Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, Younes Belhanda and Demba Ba.
His coach Herve Renard said Katongo, who is captain of Chipolopolo and was voted Most Valuable Player at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, is a hard worker.
“When he has not played the difference has been visible,” Renard, who is in contention for the 2012 CAF Coach of the Year Award on Thursday, said.
Katongo, who is also a soldier in his home country, was inspirational as he led Zambia to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in February.
