When Foreign Affairs Minister Given Lubinda arrived to Kenneth Kaunda International Airport yesterday he was greeted by about 100 Patriotic Front supporters who had come out in a show of solidarity.
The embattled minister, who was returning from a Head of States Summit in the Gambia, is currently facing disciplinary charges from opponents within the ruling party for alleged acts of “treachery.”
Lubinda was met by his deputy Effron Lungu, as well as numerous armed police officers who had barricaded the area from the PF members. His arrival comes just days after he was publicly criticised by Minister of Justice and PF Secretary General Wynter Kabimba, who has frequently clashed with other PF members he views as competitors for the party leadership.
The cadres chanted slogans in praise for Lubinda who later addressed them and assured them that he would answer to charges leveled against him.
He told his supporters that there were many enemies who would want to fight them but they should avoid confrontations.
“I’m sure you will find people who will quarrel with you, but stay away from them. Be peaceful and pray to God. Know that yours truly is very happy and back home and yours truly will answer all questions,” said Lubinda.
Journalists from the Post Newspaper asked provocative questions, such as “how does it feel to be betrayed by your party” in an effort to bait Lubinda into denouncing prominent PF members, however the foreign minister responded that he holds no grudges.
