Fr ChitiThe Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection says it is disappointed that the ruling party candidate in the January, 20 presidential elections Edgar Lungu has not signed the social contract committing to a new constitution.

JCTR executive director Father Leonard Chiti said that he was cognisant of the fact that the process was voluntary and that Lungu was within his right not to sign.

Fr Chiti said that the JCTR position on the constitution remained that it was a top election issue and anybody who ducked it should be ready to face the consequences.

He said that the ruling party should have been the most eager to lead the way in the process as they held the instruments of power.

“Obviously we are very disappointed that he has not signed but then we are mindful that this is a voluntary exercise. However, we have to note that should he win the January, 20 elections and fail to deliver a constitution before 2016 we will de-campaign him,” Fr Chiti said.

“We now know that he is scared to publicly, symbolically commit to giving the Zambians a people driven constitution.”

The JCTR had asked political parties contesting the January, 20 elections to sign social contracts committing to delivering a people driven constitution.
