UPND-MtendereOn the afternoon of Saturday 10 January 2015 Zambians turned out in their thousands to attend the Mtendere rally in support of Presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr Hichilema delivered a number of powerful messages during the rally, appealing to Zambians to remember the children who are not in school because their parents cannot pay for them to go when they vote on 20 January 2015.

He spoke of the importance of preserving Zambian democracy.

‘We liberated ourselves in 1964, we liberated ourselves again in 1991, we will never accept a dictatorship.’

He assured voters ‘Your vote will be respected, your vote will be utilised’.

Addressing the crowd he spoke of the economic challenges facing the country that are resulting in tough times for Zambian citizens who are struggling with the high cost of living and limited employment opportunities.

Mr Hichilema made clear the reason for this failure – poor leadership. As the country suffers it needs someone to lead who is competent and capable and who can turn the economy around. He reiterated some of his key election commitments, removal of the employment freeze, reversal of the retirement age increase from 65 to 55 and reducing the price of farming inputs such as fertiliser. He assured those in government and public sector employment, ‘My job is to create jobs and not remove people from jobs.’

Most of all he advised voters to ‘vote for a candidate who loves you and a candidate you love’.
