MunkombweVeteran politician Daniel Munkombwe was back in the limelight albeit controversially with his endorsement of United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema.

Munkombwe, a minister in the Patriotic Front government, stepped on the platform at a rally in Choma and declared his support for Hichilema whom he labelled the best candidate.

The rally was not without controversy with another veteran Vernon Mwaanga maybe having stoked a political landmine by his declaration that it was time for a southerner to be accorded a chance to rule this country.

His sentiments were echoed by Munkombwe who also joined the Tonga trumpet in pushing Hichilema’s cause. Munkombwe said that the Patriotic Front team of Edgar Lungu had been sending emissaries to him to persuade him to join their team on the promise of a cabinet portfolio.

“You know I have been busy telling people to vote for HH this time around he is the best candidate. The other people that are standing have been busy sending people to come to me promising me that I will be a cabinet minister. I no longer have that appetite,” he said. “You know I am a political animal when I move everything moves.”

Munkombwe caused laughter when he referred to PF Southern Province campaigner coordinator Syacheye Madyenkuku as maazi ankukku (chicken droppings). The rally was also addressed by Lubanseshi Independent Member of Parliament Patrick Mucheleka who controversially said that late Africa National Congress leader Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula initiated pre-independence Bemba politicians like Malama Sokoni and Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe to politics.
