Police say they have seized counterfeit automotive products including oil, fuel air filters from Nigerian Auto Shops and arrested the owners.
Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela told journalists today that the Intellectual property unit conducted the operation on Friday.
“We wish to inform the nation that on Friday January 11, 2013, the Intellectual property unit conducted an operation on “Gud products” in the City center trading area and seized counterfeit automotive products from auto-shops owned by Nigerians and some Zambians.
“Oil, fuel and air filters from several auto-shops and other spares worth millions of kwacha were seized,” Kanjela said.
She said police further recorded warn and caution statements from the shop owners and charged them for selling goods bearing false description contrary to section 6(1) (a) of merchandise Marks act cap 405 of the laws of Zambia.
“We also charged them for being found in possession of infringed copyrighted work, contrary to section 28 (d) of Copyright and performance amendment act cap 406 of the laws of Zambia,” she said.
Kanjela said the shop owners will appear in court soon.
She further said similar operations will be carried out soon and warned the public against selling counterfeit products.
