The Secondary Schools Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ) has said the low pass rate at grade nine has signaled that the education sector is in a mess.

SESTUZ general secretary Wamuyuwa Sitibekiso said there are several factors that have led to poor results and urged government to seriously address the issue.

He said among critical issue is the lack of learning material, lack of qualified staff and poor infrastructure.

According to the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) grade nine results, there has been a drop in the pass from 44.9 percent last year to 34.6 percent this year.

“We were expecting to rise in progression rate but a drop is a disappointing factor. What we have seen is a true reflection of what is obtaining on the ground in the education sector.

“We have seen the reality of what is currently going on in our schools. There are so many things that need to be put in place such as the teacher pupil ratio [which] is below the required standard,” he said.
