Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has observed that it is unfortunate that the releasing of the Auditor General’s report has been reduced to a mere annual academic exercise.
TIZ executive director Goodwell Lungu says it is very unfortunate that no action seems to be taken on the audit reports released by the Auditor General’s office despite individuals being cited for misappropriation of public funds.
Lungu says the recently released report for 2011 still shows enormous amounts of abuse of public resources.
Speaking to Qfm News, Lungu says the PF government should not even think of distancing itself from the 2011 report because it had an opportunity to put in place mechanisms to prevent abuse of funds in the three months of 2011 it served in government.
Lungu says it does not matter whether the resources were misappropriated under the MMD or the PF because both the public service and law enforcement agencies remain the same.
He states that it is also unfortunate to note that the PF government in its period in office has never made any pronouncements of how it intends to prevent abuse of public resources in the public sector.
Lungu has since appealed to the PF government to tally the much talked about commitment to the fight against corruption with action.
He has also appealed to law enforcement agencies in the country to be vibrant in pursuing cases of misappropriation of public funds as highlighted in the Auditor General’s reports.
Lungu further states that his organization will soon give a comprehensive statement on the 2011 Auditor general’s report.
