FarmingAbout 2,000 bags of fertilizer have been reported missing in Chadiza, Agriculture Minister Emmanuel Chenda has confirmed.

In an interview today, Chenda said he had received the report of the missing fertilizer in Eastern Province.

He said police should move in swiftly and investigate the agriculture officer in the province in order to establishing fact in the matter.

“There are no sacred cows in the fight against abuse of office and corruption under PF. I will quickly get in touch with my Provincial agriculture coordinator in Eastern Province to make a follow up in the matter. Those that are involved will be certainly be brought to book,” Chenda said.

And Chenda said the PF government will change the distribution strategy of inputs under the fertilizer support programme.
He said government was not happy with the late delivery of inputs to farmer in the 2013 season.

And Northern Province minister Col. Gerry Chanda says this year’s Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) has been a disaster.

“This year’s FISP programme has been a disaster and an embarrassment to government because we made a mistake by picking Nyiombo Investment to carry out the fertilizer distribution programme,” he said.

Farmers condemned the late distribution of farming inputs this farming season.

The minister explained that the late distribution of fertilizer was not the government’s intension.

He said government was equally disappointed by the performance of Nyiombo, adding that farmers must expect a remarkable improvement next farming season as the exercise would be handled differently.
