The Lusaka High Court has refused to delay the hearing of an application in which international lawyer Robert Amsterdam applied for a stay of the case until President Michael Sata waives his immunity.

This is a matter in which President Sata has sued Amsterdam and Daily Nation newspaper proprietor Richard Sakala for defamation of character. High Court registrar for subordinate court Charles Kafunda ruled that he finds no basis of staying the proceedings.

Magistrate Kafunda said he cannot wait to hear the matter until the President’s immunity is lifted or waived because he enjoys it by virtue of the office he occupies.

Amsterdam wanted to stay proceedings until President Sata lifts or waives his immunity.
He also asked the court to reverse the order that has banned him from coming to Zambia so that he can be able to defend himself.
