Zambia’s former ruling party – MMD – is on Tuesday expected to elect for the first time in 10 years the vice president of the party to deputise its fourth leader Nevers Mumba.

The constitution of the party was amended to allow election of two vice-presidents, one for politics and the other for administration, to deputise the party leader and its National Executive Committee (NEC) meets on Tuesday to fill the positions.

Former health minister and respected physician Dr Brian Chituwo is set to go through unopposed as vice president for administration while the vice-president for politics is hotly contested by the charismatic Muhabi Lungu, Lucky Mulusa and Michael Kaingu.

Muhabi Lungu, the losing parliamentary candidate for Lusaka Central in the 2011 election, is said to be hot favourite to win the position of vice-president policts.

Former Republican president Enoch Kavindele is the last MMD official to have held the position of vice-president.

The late president Levy Mwanawasa suspended the position of vice-president so did Rupiah Banda following corruption allegation on both instances.
It will be the first time the MMD would have the position of vice president filled after 10 years.
