zambia-reports-wynter-kabimbaChief government spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni has rubbished assertions that government influenced the Anti-Corruption Commission’s decision to clear justice minister Wynter Kabimba and his Defence counterpart Geoffrey Mwamba of corruption allegations leveled against them.

Sakeni, who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, says assertion by some opposition political parties that government may have prevailed over the ACC to clear Kabimba and Mwamba of corruption allegations are baseless as the ACC operates independently.

Sakeni has since challenged the opposition political parties in the country to inquire from the ACC as to whether government had influenced its decision to clear the two ministers of the corruption allegations leveled against them last year.

The ACC was investigating Kabimba on corruption allegations related to oil deals while Mwamba was being investigated on corruption allegations related to contracts to supply electricity poles to Zesco.

But a non-governmental organization, the Zambian Voice, says the manner the ACC has handled the investigations involving Kabimba and Mwamba is a clear indication of interference from government.

Organization executive director Chilufya Tayali says it is time government allowed the investigative wings to do their job professionally and independently.

Tayali states that Zambians have faith that the officers at the ACC can carry out their tasks effectively but states that what is affecting their operations is the interference from the executive.

He says President Sata was wrong to have instructed the ACC to seek permission from him whenever the commission was investigating any of his ministers.

ACC has reportedly cleared Kabimba and Mwamba of corruption allegations.
