The Kabwe Institute of Technology has suspended over 50 protesting students on disciplinary grounds.

Confirming the Institute principal confirmed the development when Kabwe district commissioner Patrick Chishala visited the tertiary institution after receiving complaints from some students.

Last week students staged a mini protest before launching a complaint to Chishala and Central Province minister Philip Kosamu.

The students complained among other things, about poor sanitation and dilapidated hostel infrastructure, over-enrolment of students and lack of internet facilities at the learning institution.

But Institute principal Kasanda Sayila said that the affected students did not follow the laid down procedure when they approached Chishala and Kosamu.

Sayila maintained that the said students would remain suspended until they exculpate themselves individually.

“As management, we believe that the students at the campus have their own mouth piece, which is their union. By going to the DC [district commissioner] and the provincial minister, they undermined their union executive and they undermined college management,” Sayila explained.

“They did not follow procedure, and for us that amounts to indiscipline. The issues they were raising to you DC have been discussed by the students’ union and management. The issue of hostels having leaking taps, the project of making furniture and other plumbing issues have already been tabled and we are addressing those concerns. It’s just a clique of about 50 students out of more than 700 that want to instigate others,” he said.
