The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on the Copperbelt has arrested four Somali nationals and a Zambian for trafficking in miraa.
Hawa Maxmed Uli a female Somali national aged 34 residing in Ndola was arrested and jointly charged with Charles Kabungo Lesa, a Zambian national also of Ndola for trafficking in 33 bundles of miraa weighing 25 kilograms concealed in a Toyota Spacio which has since been seized by the commission.
DEC deputy public relations officer Theresa Katongo in a statement said Maxmed Uli was earlier this month arrested for a similar offence involving 27 bundles of miraa weighing 12.7kg in which the Ndola Magistrate court on 11th February 2013, convicted and fined her KR2, 000 in default 6 months Imprisonment with hard labour.
Katongo says the commission has also arrested and jointly charged three male Somali nationals, Hassan Yusuf 22, Abdunkadia Isa 25 and Saidi Ali, all of Ndola for trafficking in 4 bundles of miraa weighing 3.8 kilograms.
And the Commission has in the last one week arrested more than 30 people countrywide for trafficking in various quantities of illicit drugs.
She says all the suspects will appear in court soon. Katongo has since cautioned Zambians and foreign nationals to desist from engaging in illicit activities such as drug-trafficking and money laundering.
