Government has deferred the presentation to Parliament of the Access to Information Bill also known as the Freedom of Information Bill for enactment to June this year.
Vice president Guy Scott who last year had indicated that the Bill will be presented to Parliament in February 2013, told Parliament today that it is not possible for government to table the bill during the current sitting, owing to time required to complete all the process and procedures that have to precede the presentation of the bill to the house.
Dr Scott a Cabinet Memo has been drafted and delivered to Cabinet office which will in turn circulate the bill to Cabinet Ministers through their respective ministries for comments.
He says the process of Ministers commenting on the bill will take two weeks, before the Ministry of information and broadcasting services collects the comments and submit the bill to cabinet office.
The Vice president said it is only after the formal approval of the bill that it will be tabled before Parliament for enactment.
Dr Scott said government remains committed to the enactment of the Access to Information bill.
