Mahtani Orders UPND to Expel GBM

The multi-millionaire banker Rajan Mahtani has allegedly issued an ultimatum to the United Party for National Development (UPND) that they must part ways with their newly appointed Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) if they want to receive campaign funding from him, a well placed source tells Zambia Reports.

The former defence minister GBM, who has become a top news subject in Zambia since his high profile defection from the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) to join UPND on July 22, was tasked by UPND President Hakainde Hichilema to approach Mahtani to ask for funding for the 2016 campaigns.

However due to the bad blood between the two men, the proposed meeting between GBM and Mahtani never took place, as the banker rejected the invitation and moved his trip forward to depart Lusaka for Johannesburg in the late afternoon on Wednesday July 29, the source says, leaving GBM without any progress to deliver to his new party.

According to the source, as Mahtani departed from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Wednesday, he made a phone call to a representative of HH, where he issued his threat.

“Mahtani told HH’s man that he would only fund his campaign if the party got rid of GBM. If not, he would throw his support only behind Fred M’membe’s Rainbow Party,” the source said.

The reaction of UPND’s leadership to Mahtani’s ultimatum was reportedly very negative.

“There is no way that UPND can get rid of GBM now – they are stuck with him because the boss (HH) cannot be seen to have made a mistake. Mahtani, on his behalf, is telling UPND that GBM cannot be trusted; that he will turn on them. But they are also very bitter toward this banker. They say Mahtani thinks he owns the party and can tell them what to do, but the grassroots will not accept this. They refuse to take orders from a known money launderer,” the source claims.

Rajan Mahtani, who recently stepped down as Chairman of Finance Bank, has fallen out of favour with the current government and was placed under arrested and charged with two criminal offences on June 2. The outcome of the next election may determine whether or not he will be able to continue operating his bank, which is believed to violate numerous provisions of the banking code.

In the recent past, Mahtani was drawn into an all-out war between former Minister of Justice Wynter Kabimba and GBM, and sponsored the publication of an aggressive media campaign to attack GBM’s character.

How Much Does it Cost to Buy the Zambian Presidency?

There is always a debate on the role of money in politics and similarly how the wealthy or rich politicians impact the political platforms. Politicians who are rich always find it easy to spend or mobilise resources for campaigns. They also attract useful cadres or supporters who are merely interested in pecuniary benefits and not moved by the deep sense of royalty or any conviction in party ideologies.

Sometimes, there is a thread of thought that wealth brings success in politics. However, a debate has always played out around the world with regard to the success rate of the wealthy or rich people politics.

In developed countries such as in Europe and the United States of America (USA), political scholars have been trying to understand how rich people’s money has impacted on the political terrain of various countries.

In the US, many voters have expressed their depressing thoughts fearing that money is killing their democracy while in Britain, campaign spending is tightly regulated but worse still the total figures invested in campaigns are always worrisome.

For instance in the last election in Britain, there was a total registered voters of 45.6 million and about $54.3 million was spent. Further, a casual scan down the election spending for various states shows that the seventh costliest Senate race cost more than the entire 2010 general election in Britain.

The Americans voters are further worried that public faith in democracy is being undermined by vast sums of corrupting money and there is a prevailing suspicion that elected representatives are essentially bought and paid for by wealthy special interests.

According to a research conducted by political scientist Steve Levitt, there were interesting findings on the impact that money from the wealthy and rich politicians have on an election.

The research found that when a candidate doubled their spending, holding everything else constant, they only got an extra one percent of the popular vote.

“It’s the same if you cut your spending in half, you only lose one percent of the popular vote. So we’re talking about really large swings in campaign spending with almost trivial changes in the vote,” Levitt report stated.

What Levitt’s study suggests is that money doesn’t necessarily cause a candidate to win but, rather, that the kind of candidate who’s attractive to voters also ends up attracting a lot of money.

And it doesn’t seem as if money really causes electoral victories either, at least not nearly to the extent that the conventional wisdom says.

There are a number of US politicians who were wealthy but their money could not tilt the balance of power in their favour.

The personification of this proposition includes politicians such as Meg Whitman, Linda McMahon, Steve Forbes, Howard Dean and many others.

American business executive and politician Meg Whitman is the chairwoman, president, and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard. Whitman was early in her career touted as a potential US female president. In February 2009, Whitman contested the governorship of California as the fourth wealthiest woman in the state of California with a net worth of $1.3 billion. She spent more than $144 million of her own money than any other political candidate spent on a single election in American history but lost to a little known candidate.

Further, Linda McMahon is an American professional wrestling magnet notable for her career developing WWE with her husband Vince McMahon. Since1980 when she started business with her husband, McMahon has become wealthy through the WWE’s success. As President and later CEO of the company, she left WWE in 2009 to run unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States Senate from Connecticut, losing to Democratic Party nominee in the general election of 2010. McMahon was again the 2012 Republican nominee for Connecticut’s other Senate seat to replace retiring Senator Joe Lieberman in the general election in November 2012, but lost again to a little known candidate.

In addition, Steve Forbes is an American publishing executive who has lost twice as candidate for the nomination of the Republican Party for president in 1996 and 2000. He is the editor-in-chief of business magazine Forbes. He is the son of long time Forbes publisher Malcolm Forbes and the grandson of that publication’s founder, B.C. Forbes.

Meanwhile Tom Golisano is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is the founder of the second largest payroll processor in the United States and former co-owner of the Buffalo Sabres hockey team and of the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team. He is a founding member of the Independence Party of New York and ran unsuccessfully on its ticket for governor of New York in 1994, 1998 and 2002. He spent a combined $93 million on the three campaigns.

The situation was similar to the 2008 US presidential elections where Hilary Clinton was busking in huge millions of dollars while Barrack Obama was stringing up little finances and managed to upstage Clinton to the Democratic Party presidential candidacy and eventually won the US presidency.

Similarly, Zambia has had wealthy candidates before such as Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) leader Benjamin Yoram Mwila or BY. BY had an aggregate of wealthy that was unequalled at some point in Zambia. In the 2001 general elections, he mounted an extensive campaign after falling out with MMD during the third term debate. At some point, BY could spend months in villages meeting prospective voters, sleeping in huts and aggressively lobbying for votes. When the results were announced, late president Levy Mwanawasa triumphed while Anderson Mazoka was runners-up and BY was almost at the tail end.

Further, in the just ended January 2015 by-elections, PF candidate Edgar Lungu struggled to mobilise campaign resources while UPND candidate Hakainde Hichilema was a recipient of huge financial support from suspicious foreign businessmen. Hichilema had run a campaign that had no financial interruptions yet he succumbed to Lungu whose campaign was poorly funded.

Perhaps, this confirms the Levitt’s research findings that suggest that money does not necessarily cause a candidate to win but, rather, that the kind of candidate who’s attractive to voters also ends up attracting a lot of money.

Now, how far can a coalition of millionaires in Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba or GBM, Hakainde and cartel financier, also Finance Bank proprietor Rajah Mahtani go?

RESIDENTS of Kabanana site-and-service in Lusaka’s Mandevu constituency are happy that Government has finally built a clinic.

And Mandevu member of Parliament Jean Kapata is happy that Government is living up to its promise of taking healthcare services closer to the people.

Community representative Grace Maingo said the setting up of a clinic is a huge relief, especially to mothers and children.

Maingo said previously, people in the area used to shun medical services because the nearest clinic is very far away.

“Indeed this PF government is working. We used to travel long distances to access antenatal services,” she said.

And Kapata is equally happy that her constituency has four out of the 650 health posts Government is building countrywide.

“I am so happy that one of the four health centres we have benefited from Government is now complete. Health services have been taken closer to [the people],” she said.

She could not state the cost of the clinic, saying it is a Government-driven project.

“Mothers can now take their children to the clinic as it is nearby. This is in line with government policy to take health services to people after every five kilometres,” Kapata said.

She cautioned the residents against vandalism of the prefabricated health post.

VICE-PRESIDENT Inonge Wina has formally apologised on behalf of PF over the offensive statements made by party secretary general Davies Chama against UPND politicians.

Wina she was apologising if the words spoken by Chama had caused embarrassment and anger on some people.

She said the statement was aimed at politicians and that it was unfortunate that it affected the entire Tonga land.

“As politicians, we sometimes publicise issues out of context. I hope our colleagues will take my apologise something that comes from the party and the bottom of my heart,” she said.

Vice-President Wina has since said the party has taken disciplinary action against Chama but that it is an internal matter of the PF.

She said despite President Lungu meeting Southern Province chiefs, the matter does not seem to be resolved and that the PF will promote unity, not tribal politics.

GBM Censured by Speaker

SPEAKER of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini has censured UPND vice-president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba or GBM for insulting PF members of parliament within the parliament premises.

The censure has been made following a point of order raised by Mazabuka UPND Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo who wanted to know whether GBM was in order to hurl insults within the parliament buildings.

Nkombo is one of the UPND senior members who was earmarked to take up the position of party vice-president but it was unceremoniously given to GBM instead.

GBM insulted PF members of parliament after defecting to UPND where he has since been appointed vice-president.

Recently, GBM acted violently and threatened to beat up Mfuwe Member of Parliament and Muchinga Province minister Mwimba Malama and deputy minister Obvious Chisala outside parliament.

GBM also insulted the two ministers and told them that they are from small tribes.

Supreme Court judge Albert Wood nullified the election of Mucheleka this morning after allegations against him were proved.

The election was petitioned by losing PF candidate Lazarous Chota who initially lost in the Ndola High Court but appealed to the Supreme Court where the appeal has been confirmed.

This opens a way for another by-election following the vacant seat left by GBM after his defection to the UPND where he has been appointed vice-president.

Matibini Reprimands Radio Phoenix

ParliamentParliament’s sensitivity to the recommended upward improvement of emoluments surfaced again with Speaker of the National Assembly reprimanding Radio Phoenix for misrepresenting parliamentary proceedings.

On July, 14, 2015 the parliamentary committee on reforms and modernization presented a report that recommended wholesale improvement in the welfare of parliamentarians which was unanimously reported but once publicly reported unsettled parliamentarians who showed a rare moment of unity.

Radio Phoenix like many other media houses ran the story but drew the wrath of parliament with Kalomo Central Member of Parliament rising on a point of order after Radio Phoenix had covered the story on July, 23rd.

In his ruling the Speaker of the National Assembly while not denying that the report for the improvement of the welfare of MPs was unanimously adopted ruled the Radio Phoenix had breached parliamentary procedure.

Traditionally on increment of salaries, parliamentarians hide under the banner that they do not debate themselves constitutionally therefore limiting public debate on the matter.

The motion was moved by Lubansenshi Independent Member of Parliament Patrick Mucheleka and was overwhelmingly backed across the floor.

Matibini said procedure of adjustment of emoluments which is confirmed by the issuance of a statutory instrument by the minister of finance and that mere adoption or resolution by the house does not translate into the adjustment.

The speaker said that in view of this, the station was found to be in breach of the Parliamentary Privileges as provided for by 25 b (National Assembly Act) Section 12 of the Laws of Zambia which outlines the offences under the Contempt of Parliament.

Debating the motion Members of Parliament requested to be given an extra car for parliamentary business, increased allowances as they said they paid for expenses like dowry for their constituents therefore needed to be given more money with others requesting for increased tea break as part of the parliamentary reforms.

Kambwili-MwambaThere was side drama at the Coronation and Installation of Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Kanyanta Manga II when United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema accused Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa Emmanuel Mwamba of being the reason he didn’t win the last Presidential By-election.

Mwamba went to greet the organising committee of the Ukusefya Pa Ngwena Ceremony led by Public Service Commission Vice Chairperson, Ambassador Godfrey Musonda.

The Committee was seated next to the rank of Opposition leaders.
Out of courtesy, Mwamba procreeded to greet FDD Leader Edith Nawakwi, MMD President Never Mumba and Lunte MP, Felix Mutati.

When he moved to greet former Kasama Central Member of Parliament, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) who was seated with his spouse Chama and next to him, UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema, HH interjected: ” You know what did you did in the last election”

Emmanuel Mwamba answered: “Ba President (ba UPND) I just came to greet all of you”

Hichilema responded.”You can’t call me President when you are the reason I’ am out office”

Mwamba responded: “Yali ni nkondo, it was a war,”

Hichilema responded:” The economy is bad, this man you put there has failed, are you happy now?”.

Mwamba: “Sir you know that’s not true. We also have our side of the story. That’s your story. But Sir, I am here just to greet you”

Emmanuel Mwamba moved back to talk to GBM who was saying he is itching for the by-election but Hichilema kept on saying: ” You know what you did( pointing at Emmanuel. And I know what you did”.

In the last election, the PF Media & Publicity Committee ran an effective Parallel Voter Tabulation(PVT) system whose projection were released on the PF online page and Emmanuel Mwamba’s facebook page.

The PF PVT system became so effective that international media was using it as a credible point of reference.

During the period of election results, the PVT proved effective in projecting the likely winner.

It is this published work that the UPND leader accuses Mwamba of allegedly manipulating and being privy to ECZ electoral results.

President Edgar Lungu officiated at the colourful Ceremony in Mungwi District.
The Coronation and Installation was conducted by the Archdiocese of Kasama presided over by Archbishop Ignatius Chama.

Unions Threaten Strikes if CBU Lecturers Fired

THE Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia has warned that it will hold mass nationwide demonstrations if the government fires unionised Copperbelt University employees who are protesting against management.

And FFTUZ president Chingati Msiska says President Edgar Lungu must control his ministers who are bringing the government into disrepute through careless statements.

In a statement, Msiska stated that there were better ways of addressing the conflict between the government and lecturers at the Copperbelt University.

“It is very sad that the nurses were fired and the labour movement remained within the confines of the law. But if the Honourable minister wants to push the labour movement any further, we shall respond by carrying out mass demonstrations against victimisation of our members,” Msiska stated. “We appeal to the President to control such ministers who put the image of government into disrepute in the eyes of the general public. We have systems in place to guide relations between government and other stakeholders, and as such, we should not employ totalitarian tendencies in the way we govern our people.”

He stated that threats by chief government spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili to fire lecturers at the university would only aggravate the situation.

“We, therefore, stand together with Zambia Congress of Trade Unions – ZCTU – and condemn the threats issued by the Hon Minister of Information and Broadcasting. As a labour movement, we shall not let our fellow workers be threatened with dismissal when there is room for constructive dialogue,” stated Msiska.

Opinion: GBM is a ‘Politicalpreneur’

$

The speaker of Zambia’s parliament my have ‘tossed’ Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) out of the house but the burly businessman knows that the loss of his seat is merely a temporary setback.

GBM’s political maneuvers over the past few months seem to suggest a properly thought – out political strategy which could realize the former defense minister’s ambition to lead Zambia as president. His decision to back Hakainde Hichilema during the 2015 presidential by election and subsequent defection to the United Party for National Development (UPND) was not by default.

For more than ten years, GBM has not hidden his ambition to become president of Zambia. While still a member of the former ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), GBM declared intentions to succeed Levy Mwanawasa at the end of his second term in 2011. He was among the party’s key financiers and was MMD’s candidate for Kabwata constituency in the 2006 general elections which he lost to Given Lubinda. Thereafter, political events in the MMD did not particularly favour his ambition and he ditched the MMD for the Patriotic Front (PF) soon after the death of Mwanawasa in 2008.

In the PF, GBM financed his way to the top leadership of the party and earned himself the position of minister of defense in 2011. Soon after PF’s 2011 electoral victory, the former Kasama parliamentarian set in motion the process to position himself as Micheal Sata’s successor through a vigorous social media campaign and among party cadres across the country.

However, his campaign activities met with some stiff competition from an equally determined presidential hopeful in the name of Wynter Kabimba who was, at the time, the chief executive of the PF. The fight between GBM and Wynter intensified as Sata’s health deteriorated and the possibility of a presidential by election became real. Wynter and the so called cartel managed to frustrate GBM out of government and tried to hound him out of the PF but he fought back fiercely. In the end, GBM and his allies engineered the dismissal of Wynter from government and the influential position of party Secretary General at the end of August in 2014.

However, history repeated itself for GBM when the wind of fortune blew not in his favour but towards Edgar Lungu who eventually succeeded Micheal Sata in early 2015. Having failed to secure nomination as PF candidate in the 2015 election, GBM’s presidential ambition was, once again, in complete disarray and in dire need for help.

But GBM is an entrepreneur and probably also a politicalpreneur. He must have seen an opportunity to ride on in the UPND whose presidential candidate had already failed to win on four previous occasions and was probably attempting for the last time.

GBM must have studied HIchilema’s political strategy which always focuses on the short term and which has made it impossible for him to strike and sustain workable political alliances.

As an absolute political novice back in 2006, Hichilema failed to reason with FDD’s Edith Nawakwi on the leadership of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which brought together the UPND, UNIP and FDD. Due to disagreements on who would lead the alliance, the UDA died soon after the election although its heart beat continued for the length of the parliamentary term due to some MPs who were elected on its ticket. Who knows? Maybe the UDA could have developed into a formidable force afterwards?

Hichilema again demonstrated lack of foresight when he insisted on leading the PF/UPND pact in 2011 leading to its collapse. HH lost another opportunity to become president after Sata’s term or, as it turned out, his death.

Surprisingly, HH failed to learn from these two past events because soon after the collapse of the PF/UPND pact, he turned down a working alliance with the MMD going into the 2011 elections.

Most recently towards the 2015 presidential by election, HH again failed to leverage political influence in the MMD through a working relationship that had already been negotiated. Clearly, with a little bit of long term political strategy or vision, HH would have already become president of Zambia by now.

GBM on the other hand, is doing the exact opposite. Firstly, GBM’s motive for joining the UPND is his long term personal ambition to become president of Zambia. He needs an appropriate vehicle to take him there and at this particular time, the UPND happens to be the perfect vehicle because its leader will be running for the last time in 2016.

Therefore, GBM’s focus, unlike that of HH, is beyond 2016. After HH fails to deliver state house for the UPND in 2016, GBM will be perfectly positioned to take over from him.

Hichilema and his followers are not able to see GBM’s schemes because they are focussing 100 per cent on 2016 and nothing else. They are also under pressure to make their leadership more colorful by reducing the Tonga influence or tag on their party. The UPND are also excited at any prospects of diluting PF’s influence in the north and will support any person or activity which seems to diminish the ruling party’s influence anywhere in the country.

Geoffrey Mwamba’s appointment as Vice President for administration in the UPND is perhaps his best political achievement in a long time because it opens the door to the resurrection of his presidential ambition. The Kasama parliamentary seat doesn’t mean anything to him anymore. In fact, he may not even contest it.

GBM will now use his financial muscle to weave his way through the UPND structures and the 2016 election is a great opportunity for him, not to win, but to establish himself for the future.

Such is politicalpreneurship!

LAZ Agree with Speaker on GBM Expulsion

LAZThe Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) says Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Patrick Matibini did not err when he declared the Kasama Central Parliamentary seat which was held by Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba vacant.

LAZ President George Chisanga says the Speaker of the National Assembly was within the confines of the law when he declared the Kasama seat vacant.

Chisanga explains that Article 71 (2) of the constitution states that when a Member of Parliament crosses floor by joining another political party, he immediately relinquishes his parliamentary seat.

Chisanga says in this case the former PF Kasama Central Member of Parliament Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba relinquished his parliamentary seat when he ditched the Patriotic Front to join the opposition UPND.

But the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has argued that the Constitution does not allow the Speaker to breach it based on any precedents or powers of the Speaker as contained in any other legislation.

YALI Governance Advisor Isaac Mwanza says the Speaker should have respected the provision of the Constitution and allowed the Courts to do their work in the case of Mwamba who has a pending matter in court challenging his expulsion from the Patriotic Front.

Mwanza thinks the courts should therefore look at the action of the Speaker and guide accordingly and should it be found that Speaker breached the Constitution in declaring the Kasama Seat vacant, he should step down.

Zambia started on a high netting their first spot kick through Green Buffaloes’Jack Chirwa with Ivory Coast’s Kessie Yanick skying his effort.

Star striker Ronald ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba had his effort saved Bamba Drissa with Roger Assalle tucking his away for the visitors.

Investors Running Away from Mahtani’s Finance Bank

Loitta Group Chief Executive Officer John Chinyanta has revealed how he pulled out his investment from Rajan Mahtani’s Finance Bank shareholding because of problems with the dodgy shareholding structure.

Addressing delegates at United Kingdom funded Nyamuka Zambia business conference in Lusaka last week, Chinyanta, a Zambian entrepreneur who is based in Mauritius said his business has spread across Africa and that he has always been trying to find investment opportunities in Zambia.

Chinyanta thinly suggested that his company could have had more impact in the country but that the conduct of Mahtani in running Finance Bank scared his money away.

“We pulled out of Zambia because of structural issues with Finance Bank but we still own the Zamlink,” he told a packed audience that comprised diplomats, senior government officials and prominent businessmen.

He said at some point, the company acquired shareholding in Mahtani’s finance Bank but that there were problems with shareholding structures and he decided to pull out.

Chinyanta said his company has only been managing the Zamlink business, an internet programme that enables bank customers without Visa cards to conducting inter-banking business through Automatic Tailored Machines (ATMs) withdraws.

This would not be the first investor to run away. Earlier this year, Credit Suisse significantly reduced their “shareholding” in the bank by 25%, even though under the terms of their purchase they would be guaranteed at least $13 million in the event of an IPO.

Mahtani has found himself in trouble for over subscribing his shares in Finance Bank and fronting other people so that he can remain with the major stake in the bank, which is against Zambian law.

These are issues that have been subjected to investigations and even led to the repossession of the bank under the Act (BFSA) on ground of suspicious banking transactions that breached the Banking and Financial Services Act, including money laundering and insider borrowings – unlawful practices which similar led to the revocation of Mahtani’s banking license in Malawi.

On June 2 of this year, Mahtani was arrested and charged on two counts of criminal forgery, which followers earlier arrests in 2011 on a series of other financial offences.

Copperbelt UPND Reject GBM’s Veep Appointment

GBMUPND Officials on the Copperbelt are in serious panic after the appointment of Former Kasama Central Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba as Vice President.

Some Senior Parties Members have accused the top party leadership of making unilateral decisions without consulting the grass roots.

“What is painful is that new members joining the party are always given big positions in the party yet we the founders are left out in provinces. It is not fair, look at how Canicious Banda got that position; are you sure he has added any value to the party?” the source wondered.

One senior party member said it was wrong for the top leadership in Lusaka to appoint any member who joins because they are rich and can help finance party operations.

“How do you appoint GBM Vice President? That man can’t be trusted, for how long has he been with us (UPND) to get that position? These are questions the top leadership must answer,” the source said.

“It will not be easy to sell GBM is Kasama, he has money, yes, but that province is not yet ripe for us. We needed to do ground work first not just doing things abruptly. He is considering himself a heavy weight in Kasama. Do you remember he lost to Given Lubinda in 2006 with a big margin whilst in MMD and so what’s the guarantee he will win in Kasama?” the source asked.

Mwamba is on a 10 day visit to Kasama with UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema. He lost his seat after crossing over to the opposition despite attempting to hold on to it until speaker Patrick Matibini ruled he was off tangent.

Kalusha Kicks Off Early Campaigns, tells Others to Stop Campaigns or Face Bans

Kalusha Soccer BallZambia’s football association president Kalusha Bwalya has asked his competitors to stop campaigning ahead of the 2016 elective annual general meeting set for March or face sanctions while his men go round the country distributing branded soccer balls as part of his campaign for a third term.

Kalusha, who become the first candidate in Zambian football to introduce portrait bearing campaign t-shirts when he contested the presidency in 2008 after hiring thugs from Katondo street to Mulungushi International Conference Centre, is reportedly under pressure from club officials to vacate.

The 1988 African Footballer of the Year is seeking a third term but Zambians have grown dissatisfied with his administration which has been dodged with massive corrupt accusations.

Alongside his committee member Richard Kazala, Kalusha has shipped in some third grade soccer balls from China with imprints “This ball is donated by Richard Kazala and Kalusha Bwalya”.

According to an article published in The Post Newspaper by one of Kalusha’s known “pocket journalist”, officials are being threatened not to campaign except those as privilaged as the powers that be.

Kalusha claims those that have prematurely started campaigning for the FAZ presidency are in breach of FIFA fair play regulations and the FAZ constitution.

“Let them be forewarned, once they do something which is against the constitution and against football fair play then we will put them to book and their campaign will finish before they start. This is a warning,” he said.

Kalusha claims he will only kick-start his campaign for the FAZ presidency in January and has wished those that have began campaigning “good luck.”

His comments come in the wake an incident at Woodlands Stadium at which supporters of FAZ presidential aspirant Andrew Kamanga cheered him on while wearing t-shirts bearing his portrait.

“It’s not allowed to behave like that; some people don’t know the rules, people that have never been in football. We have to excuse them but once they breach the rules then we will take them to book. When they breach the rules and we feel that the rules are being broken, then we will deal with them,” Kalusha said.

Kalusha faces stiff competition from Lusaka business magnet Andrew Kamanga. Kamanga is said to command a lot of respect in the corporate world where he is reportedly hoping to tap into and build a firm sponsorship base for various sections of Zambian football.

KabimbaRainbow Party Secretary General Wynter Kabimba yesterday mocked some of his party members on Kitwe when he told him not to embrace ignorance in his life.

The incident happened when Kabimba featured as guest at the Press Freedom Committee of The
Post at Edinburgh hotel in Kitwe.

One of the cadres asked him to explain clearly why he embraced the socialism.

“I want to know this socialism you are talking about because I remember when we had such a case in the Kaunda era people suffered and were always queuing up for food. Won’t we have the similar problem with you?” he asked.

Kabimba responded in his usual way, which did not go well with some of the cadres who ended up calling him general (army officer).

“Why do you want to define socialism in a negative way, don’t be ignorant with some of these things, okay. I have been explaining here for some time; ours is not what you are thinking,” Kabimba said.

Later another member wanted to know if the Rainbow Party had offices in Kitwe when the District Chairman answered him in a manner that didn’t go well with other officials.

Rainbow Member: “I want to know if the Rainbow Party has offices here.”
A District Chairman named Mwewa responded; “yes, we have offices here at AFCOM house the only problem is with you people. You want us to be dragging you.”

Sensing the disconnect in the response, Kabimba interjected asking Mwewa to sit down; “aha, no imwe (you) sit down. Forget the last party, yes we have offices here in Kitwe.”

Another Member shouted “General mwasosa bwino (General you have spoken well) but Kabimba said “am not a general.”

CBUThe Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) has called on President Edgar Lungu to listen to the cries of the hundreds students at CBU and re-open the institution.

And the students union has stated that the allegations by the Minister of Education Dr. Michael Kaingu that students are compromised are not true.

COBUSU President Humphrey Mwenya says the much publicized and anticipated 31st July 2015 University Council meeting date for announcement of the opening date, as earlier stated, is quiet obvious and unfortunate that no tangible conclusive solution has been arrived at regarding opening of CBU.

Mwenya says for two years now students and other prescribed members of council have been denied the chance to seat on the board saying it is a serious breach of the Higher Education Act which mandates them to seat and make decisions on council.

He has disclosed that the students at the second highest institution have embarked on an ‘OPEN CBU CAMPAIGN’ and they are engaging all stakeholders to join in the campaign so that the vulnerable CBU student can go back to class.

Mwenya has since called on President Lungu to seriously considering interfering in the situation saying it is too much now.
