Zambia campaign for a place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil has been complicated by Ghana’s convincing 4-0 hiding of Sudan.
Herve Renard’s team still leads Group D after a 1-all draw against Lesotho in Maseru on seven points but Ghana’s 4-0 win means there is more pressure for Chipolopolo to maintain the top slot as the two teams are only separated by a point.
A 10 man Chipolopolo side had to do without their traditional messiah Kennedy Mweene who was red carded for a professional foul Litsepe Marabe in the 50th minute after the first half had ended goalless.
Coach Herve Renard withdrew Romania based Fwayo Tembo as Joshua Titima took Mweene’s place in goal.
Zambia seemed to have been roused out of slumber with the imposing Collins Mbesuma knocking on the Lesotho goal.
His efforts paid off when he eventually found the target in the 73rd minute through a header after good service from Isaac Chansa.
Shortly after his goal Mbesuma was withdrawn for Jonas Sakuwaha while William Njobvu stepped in for Rainford Kalaba changes that could prove a talking point long after the Maseru encounter.
Zambia seemed to have slid into contentment when Sakuwaha was disposed at the stroke of 90 minute for the hosts to spoil the party for the fallen champions through a Litsepe Marabe goal.
The result lit up the atmosphere in the tiny mountainous country that treated the result as a victory.
