rupiah-banda-zambia-reports-decFourth Republican president Rupiah Banda will know today whether he can proceed with judicial review in the controversial circumstances in which his immunity was striped by the Zambian Parliament.

Out of 158 members of parliament, only 80, majority of whom were ruling Patriotic Front and a few compromised opposition lawmakers passed the motion to strip Banda of his immunity so that he would face prosecution for alleged corruption.

High Court Judge Anne Sitali is expected to make a ruling to indicate the legality of Parliament’s decision.

Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini allowed Parliament to carry on the debate despite the court process. Opposition MPs had walked out in the process but the motion went through.

Meanwhile, Banda will continue his appearance before the Government Invesigative on Monday next week. GJIT spokesperson Namukolo Kasumpa said Banda will appear for questioning on allegations of corruption.

Since leaving office in 2011, Banda has found himself continuously being accused of corruption a move he deems as political persecution.
