The on-going Constitution Convention has elected to uphold the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation further increasing more people driven recommendations that include the 50+1 and presidential running mate clause which have all been adopted.
And the gathering has rejected the federal state proposal saying it will divide the nation.
During the morning session the delegates said they would maintain the Christian nation clause.
Zambia is currently undergoing yet another constitution making process and nearly all constitution conferences have passed the Christian Nation clause. Second Republican president Frederick Chiluba declared Zambia a Christian Nation in 1991.
However, Chiluba – an evangelical Christian – was condemned for declaring Zambia as a Christian Nation by other church mother bodies including Catholics. The clause has therefore been an emotional subject.
But all constitutional conferences starting with the Mungomba, Constitutional Review Commission (CRC), the National Constitution Conference and now President Michael Sata’s Technical Committee have all unanimously adopted the clause.
