Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has written to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) seeking an explanation on the clearance of Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba on allegations of corrupton.
UPND Deputy Secretary General Kuchunga Simuusamba said it was clear that Mr Kabimba was never questioned by the ACC as the only time he appeared before the anti-graft body he carried his cadres to intimidate the investigation officers, eventually preventing the interview from taking place.
Following this incident at the ACC, President Sata appeared to support Kabimba’s act of impunity by publicly castigating ACC Director General Rosewin Wandi, instructing her not to “embarrass” the PF by investigating his ministers without his permission. Commenting on the incident, the Law Association of Zambia pointed out that the president cannot give such instructions to the corruption authorities.
Mr Simuusamba said it was clear that Mr Kabimba had not in any way been subjected to any process.
He said with the Republican President having publicly stated that the ACC needed his permission before probing high pfrofile government officers the investigative process was compromised.
“Mr Kabimba was cleared in a very suspicious manner because we even doubt if he appeared before any investigative officers. All he did the only time when he appeared was to intimidate the officers as he carried with him acdres,” he said.
Mr Kabimba was being investigated for allegedly soliciting for a bribe from oil company Trafigura.
