Tempers flared this morning in the Kapiri Mposhi Constituency where a parliamentary by-election is scheduled for next week after the door to where ballot papers were stored was found open without any reasonable explanation.
An official from the Electoral Commission Zambia (ECZ) named Mr Mphande failed to give reasons why the door was left open overnight, which angered opposition members who are very suspicious that the ruling Patriotic Front party is determined to manipulate the ballot.
ECZ officials had a torrid time trying to calm the situation and as a compromise the parties involved opted to go through all the boxes to ensure that the boxes were not tampered with.
So far concerns have been raised over the manner the issue of electoral officers has been handled with FODEP having blown the whistle on some ghost officials shipped from other provinces.
The people of Kapiri Mposhi got the polls to elect a member of parliament after incumbent Lawrence Zimba’s election was nullified by the High Court and the Supreme Court upheld that decison. Mr Zimba had won the seat on an MMD ticket but is now seeking re-election under the UPND. Eddie Musonda is now running for the seat on the PF ticket.
