Clik here to view.Marketers at Chimwemwe Market in Kitwe are not happy that their trading place has not been rehabilitated up to now following promises by the Patrotic Front (PF) government.
The marketers are incensed with the deteriorating levels of the infrastructure at the market. Some of the basic facilities that are in poor sight include toilets, which are either not functioning or they are blocked by flowing sewer.
The marketers talked to said they had been asking using toilets in nearby houses to answer the call on nature because the market did not have facilities for them.
“For how long can the owners of these houses continue to allow us to use their toilets in the homes because it not once or twice when someone has to use the toilet in a day? We when were voting and many voted for the PF, which we thought would address the challenges were are facing. The story now is different because matters have gone bad and these councilors are just talking about promises and what the MMD did not do. We want them to correct these mistakes but our hope has gone in even in the PG leaders,” said Joyce Mwelwa who trades at Chimwemwe Market.
Mrs Mwelwa said the sewerage system at Chimwemwe Market was not functional and this put the health of both marketeers and shoppers at the risk of contracting diseases, which could break out any time.
She said the PF leaders had made a lot of passionate promises and they looked like true leaders, but the reality was that many of them were merely after self enrichment.
Mrs Mwelwa said President Michael Sata must intervene in the matters regarding markets because he once served as a minister who was in charge of the markets.
“We want Mr Sata to really look at these problems. He was always here during the campaigns and we thought he would look at our plight and we are not going to compromise on this issue,” she said.
Another maketeer, Jones Mwanangombe said the authorities needed to work on the market infrastructure.
He said diseases such as cholera and dysentery would break out if the situation continued because people were using street corners and other unconventional places to answer the call of nature.
“This is not like Kitwe. We thought the PF will be different from the MMD, but nothing is changing. The PF councilors must work hard instead of just politicking and doing nothing for the people. So far, we have not seen any improvement since the MMD left since things are still the same,” he said.
But Kitwe Mayor Chileshe Beupe said Chimwemwe Market would be rehabilitated soon because the authorities were waiting for materials to undertake the work.
He said the PF had come in full force to work for the people and the marketeers must exercise patience although he did not clearly state when the repairs would begin. He said the MMD was responsible for the poor state of the market.
