The Patriotic Front government has embarked on hurried last minute upgrades of lodges in Livingstone following concerns that the country is lagging behind in preparations for the UNWTO General Conference which the country is co-hosting with Zimbabwe.
This is being done through Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC).
CEEC has announced that it is in the process of concluding the selection of lodges to benefit from the 3-million kwacha rebased empowerment fund for Southern Province in two weeks time.
The conference in set for August and Zimbabwe is reported way ahead of Zambia in preparations of its Victoria town. In Zambia, minister Slyvia Masebo has been making assurance but her counterpart Christopher Yaluma recently expressed concern with the rate at which preparations were going.
The concerns have prompted to CEEC communications manager Glenda Masebe to announce through the PF controlled and State owned ZNBC that the commission is currently conducting a selection process of the lodges that applied.
She says 30 lodges have been targeted to receive 100-thousand kwacha rebased for upgrading their infrastructure ahead of the UNWTO General Conference set for August this year.
Meanwhile, the African Union (AU) has pledged unwavering support to Zambia and Zimbabwe towards the successful co-hosting of the 20th UNWTO General Assembly in August this year.
Deputy chairperson of the African Union Commission Erastus Mwencha says the continental body is ready to overwhelm Zambia and Zimbabwe with support because the two countries will co-host the UNWTO in the name of Africa.
