Lusaka-high-court-big-pixCourt bailiffs on Wednesday May 8, 2013 pounced on Dr. Martin Mtonga and siezed various household property to recover an undisclosed amount of money over a loan obtained from a local financial organisation.

Dr. Mtonga was head of former president Mr. Rupiah Banda’s campaign office for the 2011 Presidential and General elections.

Efforts to reach Dr. Mtonga on his mobile phone have been unsuccessful but sources at the Sheriff’s office in Lusaka have told Zambia Reports that the exercise was done on Wednesday morning after a warrant of distress was issued by a named law firm on behalf of the financial lending organisation.

The sources said the exercise was led by a Mr. Liuwa a very senior officer from the Sheriff’s office and was successful as Dr. Mtonga co-operated fully.

Dr. Mtonga has refused to co-operate with the Government Joint Investigations Team, GJIT, on matters related to former president Banda.

Sources say the move by bailiffs could be at the instigation of someone in the corridors of power to fix him.

Zambia Reports has learned that the law firm acting on behalf of the financial lending institution is owned by a prominent Lusaka lawyer who turned down a job offer by President Michael Sata in October 2011. The same lawyer has a serious stake in the company that lent money to Dr. Mtonga.

However, sources at the Sheriff’s office have also revealed that they were supposed to move on former Citizens’ Economic Empowerment Commision, CEEC, chief executive officer Mable Mung’omba and her husband Ryder regarding the same money Dr. Mtonga is being pursued for but they were told to hold on as the couple is believed to have contributed funds to the Patriotic Front, PF, campaign in 2011.

As it turns out to be, Mable is Minister of Traditional Affairs Nkandu Luo’s young sister, so anything is possible under the PF.
