Local players that beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in a 20th Gabon Memorial were paid K50 old currency for their victory.
According to the players who opted to remain anonymous the Lusaka based players were paid K50, 000 while their colleagues from the Copperbelt got K120 for their transport.
The players said it was unfair that an international engagement could yield such a low allowance.
“We were shocked that we were paid KrK50 for winning against Zimbabwe which was for our transport. You can imagine that was an international game and we had to sacrifice our time at the time our clubs needed us,” said the source.
“It is very demotivating and we had to fight to win. That game was very important for the memory of those players that died. It is like you were mocking them; they died because, let us face it, because they were not taken good care of and now we were playing a game in their honour only to be paid K50.”
The other source said, “It is about money but setting a standard for national duty and the national jersey. We were better off at our clubs where we get a bigger allowance for a win.”
The local players had camp before the Zimbabwe game and the coaches were reluctant to play that game as it was not on their initial plan.
“The coaches did not know about Zimbabwe. We only got a confirmation on Thursday and the team was like a forcing matter to make it up,” said a FAZ official.
