Ballot PapersFormer Prime Minister under the United National Independence Party (UNIP) government, Malimba Masheke has joined opposition political parties calling for the immediate commencement of printing of ballot papers locally.

Gen. Masheke sad that the continued hosting of allegedly induced by-elections in the country is worrying and requires that government cuts down on costs incurred when printing ballot papers abroad, by printing them locally.

He said that printing of ballot papers locally was cost effective under the UNIP regime and that the same can still be done under Patriotic Front government using the Government Printers.

Gen. Masheke has however reiterated the need to ensure that there are no malpractices that can jeopardize the electoral system while the ballot papers are being printed locally.

And the retired General has also described the continued resignations and defections of Members of Parliament from the opposition to join the ruling PF as a betrayal of the trust of the people that voted for them.

Gen. Masheke has further stressed the need for the country’s new constitution to firmly address the issue of willful resignations and defections of MPs in order to cut down on cost that are being incurred in country due to perpetual hosting of by-elections.
