Kitwe MinersThe imminent job losses on the Copperbelt are threatening the peace of the mining dependent region with some miners taking to the street today in Kitwe.

Over 50 miners marched to the Mine Workers Union offices in Kitwe seeking a clear cut response on the status quo.

The miners’ attempt to trek to ZNBC studios was foiled by police although it is uncertain how long the fragile peace will hold.

Since Konkola Copper Mines announced its intention to lay off 2000 workers following the slump in copper prices and the increased cost of production there has been a raging debate on what will happen.

Government has half-heartedly claimed the miners’ jobs are safe while KCM insiders say the decision is irreversible.

Zambia is currently rocked with protests as any slight decision by the Patriotic Front government is met by strong opposition sometimes resulting in force by members of the general public.

There are protests across sectors with university students, some Civil Society Organisations and bus drivers joining while miners, majority of whom voted President Sata, now the latest inclusion.

Ordinary citizens in Lusaka’s Kanyama slums rioted on Monday following decision by government to remove them from a stone crashing site that they occupied illegally.
