The Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has expelled its Sinazongwe Member of Parliament Richwell Siamunene after he failed to turn up for a disciplinary hearing.
Siamunene, who has taken up a deputy ministerial appointment in the ruling party without his party’s blessings, refused to appear before the disciplinary that was convened at the party’s head office in Kabulonga.
Party Deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said Siamunene had been expelled for alleged gross misconduct.
“The party has expelled the Sinazongwe lawmaker for gross misconduct. We had given him an opportunity to give his side of the story but he did not show up leaving the party with no choice,” Mweetwa said.
“He was given sufficient time to exculpate himself.”
But Siamunene, who had initially claimed he would be away on national duty as commerce deputy minister, said he could not appear because the outcome had been predetermined.
Siamunene has already been to his constituency in the company of vice president president Guy Scott to lay the ground for a by-election.
