michael-sata-glasses-chiefsThe Bemba Royal Establishment has expressed concern over the manner in which the Patriotic Front government has continued to directly interfere in the Bemba tradition and chiefs affairs.

Patrick Mucheleka, a member of the royal family, says the government’s recognition of Chiefs Chewe and Chimbuka respectively in Chinsali District of Muchinga Province, without any regard to the Bemba tradition and procedures is unacceptable.

Mucheleka, who is also Lubansenshi Member of Parliament, says with regard to Chief Chewe who is supposed to come from Ngoshemukote lineage, this family lost their traditional rights to become chiefs when they were banished in 1870 during the reign of Chitimukulu Sampa Kapalakasha.

He adds that it is unacceptable to bring back an issue in 2013 that was dealt with more than 140 years ago.

Mucheleka says government’s interference in the chief’s affairs is aimed at weakening the Bemba Royal Establishment.

He has since appealed to the Bemba speaking people and other people of goodwill to stand up in solidarity with the Bemba Chiefs and Bashilubemba to protect the traditional setup.

Meanwhile, Village Headmen in Nakonde district of Muchinga Province have appealed to Government through the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs to consider putting them on a salary.

According to the letter submitted to Chieftainess Nawaitwika of the Namwanga People during her sensitization tour on early marriages at Chilolwa health centre grounds yesterday, the village headmen appealed to Government to consider start paying them for the work they do in the community.
