George Mpombo has formed the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which he says will be a bulwark against injustice, oppression and all forms of hegemonic tendencies.
In an interview, Mpombo, a former deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria and defence minister in the MMD government, said his decision to form a political party was as a result of the overwhelming support he received from all the provinces.
“We are now putting in place arrangements…in view of the overwhelming response from all the provinces we are now setting ground for the registration of a political party which will be known as People’s Democratic Party. This will be broad-based national party, a truly one Zambia one Nation party. The party will strive to restore Zambia’s dignity in the comity of nations within SADC and the international community,” said Mpombo.
He said the treacherous usurpation of democratic tendencies by the PF government had turned Zambia into a rogue state.
He said his party intends to reverse this and set the country as a truly democratic vibrant state.
“My party will also ensure that there is no dangerous political brinkmanship between political players and the opposition will be treated as part of a democratic process. We will also embark on dynamic economic policies that will improve the lives of the people.
We want to create an economic climate which will ensure that people have food on the table when they wake up in the morning. We want to improve the collapsing medical facilities and stop all sorts of political pandemonium in the governance of the nation,” he said.
When asked about sports minister Chishimba Kambwili’s description of him as a fly on the political scene, Mpombo responded: “Mr Kambwili is a political knock engine of political inconsequential and catastrophic consequences.”
Mpombo said Kambwili was a political millstone hanging around the neck of the PF.
He said the PF should step in and stop what he termed as Kambwili’s “political combustion” because the damage that he was doing to the unity of the party was tremendous.
“For instance, President Michael Sata had to truncate the functions of the Ministry of Labour and Social Services because of Kambwili’s political suicide bomber activities. He was becoming an embarrassment to the extent that he would call on companies and threaten managers with deportation. He was found to be a major embarrassment, that’s how the President removed the other function from the ministry and left him with only Ministry of Youth and Sport. He has no political skills at all,” said Mpombo.
