Former defence minister in the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) George Mpombo has described the Patriotic Front’s one and half years in government as a tragic leadership failure.
Mpombo, who resigned from MMD to join PF campaigns and was rewarded with the position of deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, said the ruling party had departed from its manifesto.
He warned that the PF was headed for failure and if they did not rectify their shortcomings, the political consequence were too ghastly to contemplate.
Featuring on Radio Phoenix’s Let the People Talk, Mpombo said PF was galloping into different direction all together and disputed assertions that his criticism of the ruling party was as a result of sour grapes for being recalled from Nigeria.
“Initially I didn’t want to go to Nigeria. My appointment into Nigeria was a slap in the face and its my family that prevailed upon me. Otherwise, I went to Nigeria leaving my heart in Zambia. I was not excited about going to Nigeria,” he said.
Mpombo said he resigned a more lucrative position of minister of defence in the MMD governemt and saw no reason why he would mourn about the Nigeria posting when “as a deputy ambassador, you are just a chola boy in a foreign mission. The high commission calls all the shots and stuff.”
The former Kafulafuta MP who recently formed a political party calling it the People’s Democratic Party said he would continue speaking for justice in the country.
“I am a nationalist and speak for national good. I believe strongly PF is leading this country in a wrong direction. I am not saying they should have rewarded me,” he said.
Mpombo said he was not bitter for not being rewarded after the 2011 elections when the PF won and quoted 1 Thessalonians 5:18 saying; “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
He also said everything works for good to those that love God. “When you are in a position of quagmire, you give thanks,” Mpombo said.
Mpombo condemned the removal of subsidies on fuel, maize and agriculture inputs saying the decision was “like you are using a sledge hammer to kill a fly.”
The outspoken politician also condemned the bloated government of President Michael Sata.
“They are too many Deputy Ministers, if you go to a ministry and throw a stone, it will hit a deputy minister,” he added. “This country is sleep walking into a major disaster.”
