Government has awarded a contract to put up a marquee for the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general conference to a South African company.
This is contrary to government public pronouncements that they will offer some small contracts for the UNWTO to Zambian entrepreneurs.
Energy permanent secretary George Zulu has confirmed that the contract to put up a marquee has been awarded to Gear House of South Africa.
Zulu said Gear House will only put up a marquee on the Zambian side while Zimbabwe will also do their part separately.
He said government has since been holding meetings together with Gear House representatives and that work will start soon.
The announcement that work will start soon also question the nature of the marquee. This is because the conference will be held in August and one wonders what government meant to the effect that erecting a marquee can take months to complete.
