Mkaika MMD member of Parliament (MP) David Phiri has resigned from the former ruling party to join the Patriotic Front (PF).
Phiri, who announced his defection to the PF in an interview in from Katete yesterday, said he has decided to join the ruling party because the MMD is dead.
He said no matter how good a person is, it is impossible to score in a losing team.
Phiri said he wants to work with the PF government because it has shown commitment in as far as the development of the country is concerned.
“I have consulted the people of Mkaika and they have advised me to work with the ruling party so that we can develop the area.
“I have been accused of denouncing the MMD because I accepted to work with the government, but what I can say now is that development can only take place in Mkaika when I work with the government,” he said.
He said if given chance to re-contest the seat under the ruling party, he will work hard to ensure the PF wins the parliamentary by-election.
Phiri said the continuous defections by MPs from the opposition are not being engineered by the PF government but by some opposition leaders who are not willing to supplement Government’s efforts to improve living standards in the country.
He said the defections are as a result of poor leadership in the opposition and good leadership by the party in Government.
Phiri said people should not be deceived by the MMD leadership whose main aim is to frustrate Government’s efforts by spreading lies to Zambians.
