Civil servants have reacted angrily to commerce deputy minister Miles Sampa for claiming that the ruling Patriotic Front government was taking care of them in his attacks directed at opposition leaders both former finance ministers Edith Nawakwi and Ngandu Magande who raised concern over a budget overrun.
In an article published by the State owned and PF controlled Zambia Daily Mail yesterday which was also published by Zambia Reports, Sampa described as unfortunate and unnecessary Nawakwi and Magande’s decision to deliberately mislead the nation on the matter for the sake of playing politics.
“The former ministers of finance Ngandu Magande and Edith Nawakwi’s claims that the PF Government has burst the national budget into an overrun are both untrue and mischievous,” Sampa said.
Sampa expressed concern at the fact that despite both politicians-Nawakwi and Magande-being former finance ministers, they still “greatly lack the ability to make an argument based on factual figures and statistics.
The PF Government has recently given civil servants “more money in the pockets” according to Sampa, with the lowest paid civil servant taking home a minimum of KR3,000 which translates into a de facto 200 percent wage hike, the highest adjustment civil servants have gotten since independence.
But civil servants who have given Zambia Reports the collective agreement between their union and the PF government said Sampa was not being truthful and lying to the general public.
“It is a lie to say Civil Servants have been given more money. The lowest paid [civil servant] will have a take home income of only KR 1 500 and not the KR 3000 Sampa is talking about. Our leaders should learn to be truthful. Please read and analyse and see for yourself,” a civil servant who sought anonymity said.
Sampa, who is President Sata’s nephew and Matero member of parliament, is a self appointed PF spokesperson but was recently embarrassingly grilled by MMD member Muhabi Lungu during a live television discussion programme on subsidies, issues which he boasts and claims to understand.
