Mulongoti apologises to MMDPeople’s Party president Mike Mulongoti says the cancellation of former President Rupiah Banda’s diplomatic passport is tantamount to convicting him outside the courts of law.

Commenting on President Michael Sata’s revocation of the elder statesman’s passport, Mulongoti said the Patriotic Front government had imprisoned Banda outside the law.

“I do not know in whose interest they are doing it because they removed his immunity because ordinarily that was an enough step. But to go all the way to ban him from traveling when he has been compliant with the law is tantamount to imprisoning him,” he said.

“They have convicted him outside the courts of law which I do not think is fair.”

He added: “These things have a way of coming back to haunt the perpetrators of injustice. Really the country does not need that kind of approach to leadership.”

Banda, who the PF has had his presidential immunity lifted, has had his diplomatic passport cancelled barely a few days before he was due to travel to Tanzania for a Smart Partnership Conference.

This is after the cartel comprising Fred M’membe, Mutembo Nchito and Wynter Kabimba had learnt that for the third time the High Court was due to grant the former Head of State permission to leave the country through an application.

The cartel in coordination with State House has twice ignored a court order to block President Banda from travelling outside the country on official invitation by other Heads of State and international institutes.

Several politicians and Civil Society Organisations have condemned the behaviour of Zambian authorities sayin it is infringing on Banda’s human rights.
