Supporters of Zambian President Rupiah Banda dance with party flags in the capital Lusaka as he launches his 2011 election campaignA Movement for Multi Party for Democracy has backed calls to form a merger with fellow opposition political party United Party National Development (UPND).

Copperbelt MMD spokesperson Yotam Mutayachalo said the merger could provide s stronger voice for the opposition in the country.

“The merger could be a good idea for the two strongest opposition political parties because the opposition need a stronger voice,” Mutaychalo said.

“Issues of unity are always important in political parties and now that there is that suggestion we should try and explore it further. If that aide works it will provide the biggest opportunity for Zambians to have a government that will provide them the change that they desire.”

He added: “The Patriotic Front government has failed and the Zambians have come to see that. It is up to the opposition to prove that they are serious enough to unseat the PF and govern the country responsibly.”

Moves of a possible opposition coalition has been floated with former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mutale Nalumango tasked to lead a working group.
